British Supermarket Owner Announces Strong Sales Figures; Aids Bid for Safeway.

Jan. 31--Safeway's suitor Sir Ken Morrison was in fighting form as he unveiled strong sales figures and put the finishing touches to his offer.
The veteran supermarket owner said: "We are not about to pocket our UKpound 30 million break fee and head back to Bradford with our tails between our legs. We are not the kingmaker. We are not the stalking horse. We are the main event."
Morrisons shares gained 10 1/2 pence to 169 1/2 pence as underlying January sales rose 6.3 percent. The offer document is due today. Recent falls mean its all-share offer is worth just UKpound 2.3 billion compared with an initial UKpound 2.9 billion.
