Kansas Senator Snares Seat on Senate Appropriations Committee.

Feb. 1--WASHINGTON--In the congressional version of musical chairs, Sen. Sam Brownback of Kansas wound up sitting on one of the most desirable committee seats on Capitol Hill.

When Congress recently reorganized, Brownback snagged the only Republican vacancy on the Senate Appropriations Committee.

The fallout could have an effect on events as unrelated as the congressional debate over Iraq and Brownback's campaign next year to win another term.

The Appropriations Committee controls the federal spigot, whether it is money for farmers, for rural schools or for a new post office in Topeka.
