Shuttle Tragedy May Have Impact on Future of Lockheed, Boeing Space Alliance.

Feb. 3--Columbia's tragedy could have lasting repercussions for United Space Alliance, the joint venture of Boeing Co. and Lockheed Martin Corp. that has managed NASA's space shuttle program since 1996.

And while the joint venture is helping the space agency determine just what happened in the clear, blue skies over Texas, the financial outlook of Boeing and Lockheed Martin is clouded by the possibility that one or both may somehow be responsible.

Assigning responsibility may be easier than it was 17 years ago, when the shuttle Challenger exploded moments after liftoff, said Marco Caceres, director of space studies for Teal Group, a Fairfax, Va.-based aerospace research...
