Congress Crafts Legislation to Combat Identity Theft.

Feb. 3--Congress is taking another crack at trying to curb the alarming rise in identity theft.
The Social Security Number Misuse Prevention Act, recently introduced by Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif.; Sen. Judd Gregg, R-N.H.; and Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., would make it harder for identity thieves to obtain Social Security numbers by restricting public access to them.
"Identity theft is the largest white collar crime in America today," Ms. Feinstein says. "The Federal Trade Commission last week announced that the number of identity theft complaints has doubled to 160,000 in just the past year. We need to take action to stem the tide."
