Valuable Working Dogs Create Lucrative New Segment for Thai Insurers.

Feb. 6--When seven-month-old Vector died a week after contracting infectious pneumonia, the Rottweiler's owner received 35,000 baht from an insurance policy.

Vector was covered by Mittare Insurance which introduced policies for dogs two years ago.

Even so, Parinya Paothong, who raised Vector and sold him for 50,000 baht at the age of four months, said the loss was hard to accept.

"He was not only a pet but also a family member," said Mr Parinya, a professional dog-breeder who paid a yearly premium of about 2,500 baht for Vector.

Insurance offsets financial risks and is transferred to customers at no additional charge.
