Space Station Drains Money for Shuttle.

Feb. 12--WASHINGTON -- Tim Roemer remembers well the day in June 1993 when the international space station program almost fell to Earth.

Roemer, then a Democratic congressman from Indiana, had been crusading against the project, thinking it to be ill-conceived and a waste of money.

That night, on the House floor, he watched his colleagues carefully weigh how they would vote.

"You could feel the tension in the air," said Roemer, who retired at the end of last year and is now a lobbyist. "You knew there was a real sense that this vote was going to make a difference, and this vote was really going to count for a decade or longer."
