Arbitrator's Decision Freezes Delta's Furlough of Pilots.

Feb. 14--Delta Air Lines has canceled the planned furlough of 20 pilots next month after an arbitrator ruled that economic factors not directly tied to the 2001 terrorist attacks were driving the job cuts.

In a decision that gave both Delta and its unionized pilots part of what they sought, arbitrator Richard Bloch froze pilot furloughs at the current level of 1,060.

He also ordered Delta to cancel 20 pilot job cuts scheduled for March 1 and to begin recalling pilots when passenger traffic returns to pre-Sept. 11 levels.

The Air Line Pilots Association, which represents Delta's 10,000 fliers, had asked for an immediate recall.
