Palmdale, Calif., Space Shuttle Builders Feel Pain of Columbia Disaster.

Feb. 18--PALMDALE, Calif.--Like all of NASA's space orbiters, the shuttle Columbia had to go through Palmdale and the Antelope Valley to get to outer space.

On March 8, 1979, power lines were lifted, traffic lights and light poles were moved, and schools and businesses were closed so thousands could line up to watch and cheer the nation's first space shuttle roll down 10th Street enroute to its maiden launch.

Columbia was towed through the heart of this town on a giant flatbed trailer in its first land journey, from the massive Rockwell International space-division assembly plant here to Edwards Air Force Base just 30 miles north.
