National Guard Deployed to Watch Florida's Air Bases.

Feb. 20-- As a possible war with Iraq looms, National Guard troops arrived here and at other Air Force bases in Florida this week on a mission to augment base security.

Thirty-three members of the 146th Signal Battalion from Jacksonville will undergo about a week of orientation before beginning their new security duties Tuesday at this Brevard County base.

But unlike security measures taken in the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks, State Road A1A is not expected to be closed, Lt. Col. Mike Rien of the 45th Space Wing said Wednesday.

"It's hard to imagine a situation where A1A would ever be closed again," Rien said.
