Federal Ruling Means Baby Bell Companies Continue to Face Competition.

Feb. 21--The local telephone wars will continue.

With the backing of a new Federal Communications Commission ruling issued Thursday, Baby Bell companies such as SBC Communications Inc. will continue to face competition from MCI Worldcom, Madison's TDS Metrocom and others.

After months of speculation about whether FCC Chairman Michael K. Powell could convince the commission to loosen regulatory reins on local service providers, a 3-2 ruling sent the issue back to state regulators who are unlikely to limit competition.

Officials at the Wisconsin Public Service Commission said they were still sorting through the implications late Thursday.
