Rowan University Loses Land Dispute in Harrison Township, N.J., to Wal-Mart.

Feb. 22--BRIDGETON, N.J.--Rowan University lost a fight in Superior Court yesterday for 102 acres of land in Harrison Township that the growing school wanted for expansion.

The decision was a victory for Wal-Mart and its developer, American Continental Properties, which has received approval to build a store at the intersection of Routes 322 and 55. The developer has an option to buy the land, which is now a peach farm.

Last fall, Rowan sued American Continental Properties to acquire the property via the state-granted power of eminent domain. The state's need for higher education, school officials said, was greater than the benefit of another big-box store....
