Unions to Step Up Political Activity.

Feb. 26--HOLLYWOOD, Fla.--The nation's top union leaders spent as much time talking about politics as labor Tuesday as the AFL-CIO executive council annual winter meetings got under way Tuesday.

With an eye to the 2004 presidential race, the executive council adopted an aggressive plan for getting the nation's unions involved in political races earlier than ever.

John Sweeney, president of the 13-million-member AFL-CIO, said the executive council acted out of concern for working American families, whom he said have been hurt by the policies of President George W. Bush and a Republican-controlled Congress.
