NASA Administrator Defends Handling of E-mail.

Feb. 28--WASHINGTON -- NASA Administrator Sean O'Keefe on Thursday faced skeptical lawmakers who questioned how the agency handled a widespread e-mail discussion of dire landing scenarios for shuttle Columbia in the days before its fatal return to Earth.

In a flurry of e-mails as late as the day before Columbia burned up over Texas on Feb. 1, the engineers discussed scenarios of how damage incurred on liftoff might allow superhot gases to penetrate the shuttle's left wing.
