Mar. 7--Saturn's new 2003 ION is eons better than the S Series it replaced. But "good" isn't good enough to get you to the top of the economy car heap.
The problem is the ION's competitors -- there's too many of them, and a growing number are at least as good as Saturn's entry.
That would likely not have been the case had Saturn and General Motors moved more quickly to replace the aging S series instead of letting it drag on interminably. GM is making the same mistake with its Chevy Cavalier and Pontiac Sunfire, which have been around for ages. All the while, the competition is leaving these old standbys in the dust.
