Big Box Stores, Restaurants Change Colorado Springs, Colo., Area.

Mar. 9--Over the past decade or so, North Academy Boulevard has undergone the sort of transformation that's akin to turning an office into an office park.
Big-box stores, smaller shops and restaurants now line Academy between Woodmen Road and Briargate Boulevard on Colorado Springs' north side.
Only a few years ago, those stores and restaurants didn't exist. Instead, large-lot homes and even an occasional barn populated this one-mile stretch of North Academy -- a once rural area that gave way to today's busy highway.
"We've grown up with it, and (the traffic) doesn't bother us," said retired Marine Col. D.B. Pond, who's lived in a house...
