Florida Senate Panel Votes to Kill Tax Break for Ostrich Farmers.

Mar. 12--TALLAHASSEE, Fla.--Tired of being ridiculed about the state's tax break for ostrich farmers, the Senate Agriculture Committee took a small step Tuesday toward easing Florida's budget crisis.

But like ostriches, this plan isn't likely to take flight.

In a 7-0 vote, the committee agreed to abolish the sales tax exemption on ostrich feed granted to Florida farmers since 1992. Killing the exemption would pull an extra $15,000 into Florida's $54 billion state budget.

"I'm not looking to raise taxes," said Sen. Bill Posey, R-Rockledge, sponsor of the measure (SB 1670). "But I'm tired of the criticism of this exemption."
