Spokane, Wash., Hotel Owners Propose Fee to Boost Tourism.

Mar. 12--OLYMPIA, Wash.--Spokane hoteliers threw this pitch to the Legislature this week: Let us charge existing customers a little extra, and spend the bonus cash on attracting more clientele. And the lawmakers listened, since the businessmen had a useful ally: the most powerful man in the state Senate.

A bill that would create a special fee for the hotel industry was pushed by Senate Majority Leader Jim West through the Senate Ways and Means committee Monday. West, R-Spokane, was the sole sponsor of Senate Bill 6026, which would levy a fee of up to $2 per room, per night, in hotels and motels.
