Texas Instruments to Unveil New Design for Handheld.

Mar. 16--By the end of the year, consumers could buy a handheld computer that makes cellphone calls and uses two kinds of wireless networking, Texas Instruments Inc. plans to announce Monday.

The Dallas chipmaker has designed a model for a handheld that works on three standards for wireless communications. Like much of the latest generation of cellphones, it uses the GSM/GPRS standard for voice calls and data transfers.

It also uses Bluetooth networking technology to send information to a printer or transfer a phone call to a wireless headset. And it works on the Wi-Fi wireless networking standard, used to surf the Web at high speeds.
