Mar. 16--Diplomacy ran its course in a very different set of negotiations last week. Just as the world will never quite be the same after the wrangling in the United Nations, Britain's broadcast media landscape, and the alliances that fashioned it, will change forever on 30 May.

From then on, Britain's licence-fee funded BBC will broadcast its eight television channels on digital satellite in a truly free-to-air manner, bypassing the need for encryption services provided by the dominant pay-TV operator, BSkyB.
