Likely Cause of Columbia Break-Up Disaster Coming, Space Official Says.

Mar. 20--NEW ORLEANS--NASA should know the "most probable cause" of the Columbia space shuttle disaster in 30 to 40 days, a top space official said Wednesday.

Michael Kostelnik, deputy associate administrator in charge of the space station and space shuttle, made the comment at a conference planned long before Columbia's Feb. 1 accident. Ironically, the subject of the two-day meeting is the "service life extension program," which will examine how to keep shuttles flying for at least the next decade.
