Waupun, Wis., Dairy Cooperative to Eliminate 90 Jobs.

Mar. 20--Alto Dairy Cooperative in Waupun is eliminating 90 jobs, or about 16 percent of its 550 employees, as a way to cut costs in the face of continuing weak market conditions.

Alto, a member-owned cooperative of 800 dairy farmers, is one of the Midwest's largest dairy processors. But cheese prices paid to producers have been down since October 2001, shortly after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, said Dean Sommer, vice president of operations at Alto.

"That's when things really fell apart in the cheese industry," Sommer said.

There's no sign of any relief yet, he added. "I guess no one knows if it's bottomed out yet."
