Hampton, Va.-Area Hospital Wins Approval for Open-Heart Surgery Program.

Mar. 22--RICHMOND, Va. -- Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center won approval Friday for a new open-heart surgery program -- the first in South Hampton Roads not run by Sentara Healthcare.
The state ruling reversed the decision of local regulators, who had voted against the proposal.
The Portsmouth hospital will join with Columbia University to provide bypass and valve-replacement surgeries but not heart transplants. The company has said it plans to spend $6.3 million on the initiative and an additional $2.1 million for a lab for other cardiac procedures.
