Hospitals Curb Drug Firm's Sway, Ban Free Lunches for Residents.

Mar. 23--Dr. Chuck Smith, a Brigham and Women's Hospital resident two years out of medical school, stacked two pieces of pizza face to face, the better to eat them faster. He had a few scarce minutes between patients to listen to a talk on which drugs work best against high blood pressure -- and to grab a free lunch.

For as long as doctors can remember, harried residents have been a key target audience for drug makers, who lure them with sandwiches and boxed lunches to lectures on the benefits of their products. But at the recent Brigham talk, the pizza was billed to the hospital.
