Mar. 27--TALLAHASSEE, Fla.--Orange County Chairman Rich Crotty and dozens of local government officials stormed the Capitol on Wednesday to accuse Gov. Jeb Bush and lawmakers of shifting millions of dollars in state programs onto the backs of local taxpayers.
With the Legislature struggling to patch together a $50-billion-plus state budget, counties may be asked to pick up added costs in hospital care for the poor, nursing home services, affordable housing programs and even fees for running background checks on state-crime databases.
Orange County taxpayers, alone, could be asked to absorb $25 million in unexpected costs as state budget cuts are passed down, officials said....
