White House Signals Support for Modest Financial Assistance for Airlines.

Mar. 29--WASHINGTON--White House budget chief Mitch Daniels indicated Friday that modest, short-term financial assistance for the nation's airlines might be justified. But he ruled out a larger industry bailout.

"Any aid that occurs needs to be scaled to the event -- that is to say the war," Mr. Daniels told reporters over breakfast. "Some temporary alleviation of the additional security costs that they have been incurring could have a certain logic to it."

Key Republican senators, meanwhile, preliminarily agreed to include $2 billion of temporary relief in an emergency Iraq war-spending bill. The amount is about half the minimum that the airlines want....
