Florida Measure Could Double Local Phone Rates.

Apr. 25--TALLAHASSEE, Fla.--The Florida House plans to take up a measure today that could spark the biggest increase in local phone bills in state history, and lobbyists warn that Republican leaders may stage a hurry-up final vote in the chamber to stifle growing public opposition to the plan.

The measure (PCB BR 03-06, SB 654), could double basic local phone rates in Florida within four years. Opponents, including consumer groups and the Florida AARP, have hit lawmakers with e-mails and calls against the bill, saying the sharp increase in rates would hurt the elderly and poor.
