Lack of Funds Impedes Thailand's Status as Movie-Making Hub.

Apr. 25--How Thailand could compete with rivals to become a regional shooting hub or "Hollywood of Asia" is a big question unless long-standing problems involving the lack of tax and financial support are solved, industry representatives said yesterday.

At a discussion co-organised by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PWC), panellists shared a common view that the lack of funding was the major problem hindering Thailand's film industry.

Gerald Dibbayawan, CEO of international film distributor PVR, said project financing of films, as used elsewhere, was not viable locally. Film financing was restricted to private equity due to dependence on the local market....
