Yadkin, N.C., Man's Earth-Boring Bit Makes Construction Work a Little Easier.

Apr. 2--Willie Groce Jr. started four years ago with the idea of making his work a little easier.
He and his sons, Brent and Brian, worked for a mobile-home company and dug the holes for the homes' footings.
Using conventional augers to drill into the earth, the Groces got tired of shoveling away the dirt that collected around the mouth of every hole.
So Groce -- with help from his sons -- invented an earth-boring bit that takes the shovels out of their hands.
On March 18, their invention -- the Gold Digger I -- was formally recognized with a patent for "a new and useful invention," as the certificate says. They also have a patent pending for...
