Norfolk, Va., Shipyard's Innovative, Environmentally-Friendly Drydock Opens.

Apr. 4--NORFOLK, Va.--At about 3:30 p.m. Thursday, the guided-missile cruiser Monterey completed its journey from the water's surface to the air within the Metro Machine Corp. drydock.

The ship hadn't traveled far in eight hours. Metro Machine officials compare dry-docking a ship to watching paint dry or grass grow.

But the slow, systematic process marked a milestone for the ship repair yard based at the foot of the Berkley Bridge. Monterey became the first ship lifted into Metro's new Speede drydock -- built to both reduce environmental damage and improve the company's potential for attracting work on larger Navy ships.
