Colorado Senate Panel to Consider Requiring Xcel to Support Renewable Energy.

Apr. 9--A twice-unsuccessful effort to promote wind and other renewable energy gets a third chance this week in the Colorado legislature.

The Senate Appropriations Committee is scheduled Friday to consider SB 151, a bill requiring Xcel Energy to generate about 7 percent, or 400 megawatts, of its power from renewable energy by 2005.

The renewable threshold would increase over the years, growing by 2020 to 1,500 megawatts, representing about one-fourth of Xcel's current generation capacity.

A megawatt supplies power for about 1,000 people.
