Boeing, U.S. Government Make Plans for New Apache Helicopter.

Apr. 26--In nearly two decades of service, the Mesa-built Apache attack helicopter has developed a hard-fought reputation as one of the world's most formidable weapons.

But with America's enemies and potential enemies improving their defenses, the U.S. Army and the Boeing Co. are drawing up plans for a next-generation Apache that will be even more lethal than the current versions. Called the Block III Apache, it is essentially a third-generation version of the weapon system that made its debut in 1984.

Although production of the new Apache is contingent on future funding by Congress, the Block III concept has been endorsed by the Pentagon's acquisition chief...
