Hospitals Increase Education Staff to Ease Transition for New Nurses.

Apr. 27--Recent nursing school graduates can sometimes feel queasy about their newfound responsibilities.

"It's a big leap from being a student with faculty available at all times to being a fully responsible nurse for a group of your own patients," said Carolyn Gunning, dean of the College of Nursing at Texas Woman's University.

Orientation programs have long been routine at medical facilities. But as the health care industry struggles with a nursing shortage, more hospitals are dedicating staff to the task of helping nurses make a smooth transition from college into the working world.
