American Airlines to Begin Layoffs of 7,100 Workers.

Apr. 30--American Airlines Inc. will start to lay off 7,100 unionized workers this week under the new concessionary contracts approved in an effort to keep the company solvent, company officials said Tuesday.

Furlough notices are going out to 2,200 pilots, 2,400 flight attendants and 2,500 ground workers. Last week, the airline laid off 600 managers and support staff not covered by the union contracts.

The Fort Worth-based carrier also said an additional 5,000 of its junior flight attendants could be furloughed July 1.

The airline cited two reasons behind the additional flight attendant furloughs.
