Anchorage, Alaska, Officials Fight Air Industry Slump.

Apr. 27--While the airline industry endures its worst slump ever, local officials hope to keep Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport healthy.

Michael Kean, transportation director of the Anchorage Economic and Development Corporation, said 1 in 10 jobs in Anchorage are related to the airport.

"The airport is one of the stronger economic engines for the city of Anchorage and the state of Alaska," Kean said.

Anchorage International is the leading cargo airport in the western hemisphere as measured by the weight of all-cargo aircraft. It ranks fourth in the world for tonnage behind Memphis, Hong Kong and Tokyo.
