Ford's Midsize Sedan Is First of 10 New Vehicles to Use Mazda6 Platform.

Apr. 16--NEW YORK--Ford will add a midsize sedan for the 2006 model year, the first of 10 new Ford, Mercury and Lincoln offerings in the next three years that will be built off a modified version of the Mazda6 sedan platform.

The new models are targeted at sales of 800,000 units annually and are part of 65 new or newly designed vehicles Ford has promised in the next five years to silence critics who say the automaker has failed to bring enough new products, especially cars, to market.

Using one Mazda platform to build 10 vehicles allows Ford to reduce development time and cost. Ford has a controlling 33.4 percent interest in Mazda.
