Initiative to Pay Nebraska Farmers For 'Carbon Credits' Nears Reality.

Apr. 15--LINCOLN, Neb.--This could be the year that farmers get paid to fight global warming by keeping carbon in the soil.

Smokestack industries are prepared to offer money -- estimates range from a meager $2 an acre to $25 or more -- if farmers will only adopt no-till practices that conserve carbon by leaving land undisturbed between crops.

The carbon that stays in the soil, up to 30 tons an acre, and out of the atmosphere has value as credits to offset the carbon dioxide emitted by burning fossil fuels, such as coal and oil, for energy.

For years, scientists and agriculture leaders have speculated about this possible new revenue stream for the farm....
