Apr. 18--NORFOLK, Va.--Norfolk State University officials made their first detailed pitch to U.S. Sen. George Allen Thursday for funds to help the school build a new high-tech corridor.
Allen listened intently and took notes while faculty members and NSU President Marie V. McDemmond outlined a massive project called the RISE Center. RISE stands for Research and Innovations to Support Empowerment.
Over the next several years, it would transform up to 25 acres on the west side of Brambleton Avenue across from the university, into a cutting-edge materials engineering and telecommunications research mecca.
