Apr. 19--NEW YORK--At any auto show, it is easy to snuggle up to the powerful: that hot hemi, the tantalizing turbo, the mesmeric muscle car, the tempting truck.
This week, at the New York International Auto Show, I fell for none of the above as much as I did a sensible, economical, environmentally friendly, little treasure of a car.
My fancy was taken by what may be the most important car of the year: the reborn Toyota Prius, a hybrid gasoline/electric car that, in new form, goes from gimmicky to mainstream and, along with the Honda Civic hybrid, will put intense pressure on American manufacturers to step up to the plate on clean, efficient hybrid vehicles.
