Justice Department Backs Qwest's Application to Offer Long Distance.

May 3--The U.S. Department of Justice has given Qwest Communications International something state regulators would not: support for the phone company's application to offer long-distance service in Minnesota.

The Justice Department on Friday recommended that the Federal Communications Commission approve Qwest's long-distance application, an endorsement that will carry a lot of weight with the FCC.

The Minnesota Public Utilities Commission earlier refused to endorse Qwest's long-distance application because state regulators aren't convinced that the state's dominant provider of local phone service deserves long-distance business, too....
