Differences between House, Senate Lead to Meltdown in Florida Legislature.

May 4--TALLAHASSEE, Fla.--As the legislative session collapsed around him, a frustrated Senate President Jim King dropped his guard for just a minute last week as he talked about House Speaker Johnnie Byrd.

The garrulous, Brooklyn-born King is the polar opposite of the soft-spoken Byrd, a native of Brewton, Ala. Although they're both Republicans, their political personalitiesare as different as seltzer and sweet tea.

Even so, King insisted that he and Byrd had remained cordial.

"We have never raised our voice to each other, nor sworn at each other," King said emphatically.

He paused, and added, "At least, while still on the phone."...
