16 Theme Parks Have Failed in Japan Since 1998, Report Says.

May 2--OSAKA, Japan--A total of 16 amusement parks and theme parks in Japan have failed since 1998, the Osaka branch of Teikoku Databank Ltd. said in a report released Friday.

Seven of the failed parks were operated by public-private ventures with local governments' investments, the private credit-research agency said. About 200 such parks are currently in operation in Japan, it added.

Many of the failed facilities were planned and opened during the era of the so-called "bubble" economy of the late 1980s, and the operators "did not have the know-how like that of private companies, with weak business plans," the report said.
