Key Medicare Votes Expected as Congress Considers Major Overhaul.

Jun. 6--WASHINGTON--Congress is on the verge of deciding whether to make the most sweeping changes in Medicare in the 38-year history of the federal health program for the elderly.
The prospects for change have improved since the start of the year, analysts said Thursday. In the next three weeks, lawmakers will cast votes that will determine whether they press ahead this year or delay, probably until after the 2004 elections.
Among other things, Congress will decide if it wants to add a prescription drug benefit and preventive services to Medicare and to give beneficiaries more private insurance options.
