Air Samples Test Negative in Pasadena, Texas, Chemical Plant Blast.

Jun. 13--A fiery blast at a Pasadena chemical plant that sent thick smoke billowing in the area left no dangerous pollutants in the air, officials said Thursday.

Despite its potentially harmful contents, air samples taken by federal environmental officials and a private company hired by Nova Chemicals Corp. found nothing following Wednesday evening's inferno.

"We got zero. No benzene. No ethylbenzene. Those chemicals are very volatile and burn up and disperse fast," said Richard Franklin, the federal on-scene coordinator who dispatched a team of hazardous materials experts from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's emergency response center in Dallas.
