Microsoft, Other Companies with Muscle Take on Fight against Junk E-mail.

Jun. 16--Think you see too much spam? Try doing Robert Rounthwaite's job.

As part of Microsoft's new anti-spam technology and strategy group, Rounthwaite analyzes junk e-mail every day, trying to figure out why pitches for Viagra and master's degrees keep showing up in computer mailboxes, unsolicited.

When a spammer tries out a new trick, Rounthwaite usually sees it. He retraces the spam -- often fairly offensive material -- to pinpoint where it came from and how it sneaked past Microsoft's e-mail filters.

"It's kind of like chess," he said. "This is like playing a game. You've got antagonists out there that want to play against us."
