Drug Bill Amendment Would Impact Specialty Hospitals in Wisconsin.

Jun. 14--A last-minute amendment to a Medicare prescription drug bill passed by the Senate Finance Committee would essentially end the practice of physicians owning specialty hospitals, a Milwaukee attorney said Friday.

Michael Bamberger, an attorney representing clients who invest in health care issues, said the amendment could force specialty hospitals to restructure their ownership.

Two physician-owned, for-profit heart care hospitals are set to open within the next four to six months in metro Milwaukee. A specialty orthopedic hospital opened in the Milwaukee area two years ago.
