Plans to Reform Medicare Advance in House, Senate.

Jun. 18--WASHINGTON--Measures to reform Medicare advanced in Congress yesterday as the House and Senate seized what appears to be their best chance, after five years of trying, to add a prescription drug benefit to the government health program for the elderly and disabled.

The Senate has opened debate this week on a 10-year, $400 billion prescription drug plan. It would allow beneficiaries, for the first time, to receive drug coverage within Medicare or to enroll in private health insurance programs that would provide such coverage.

Senators are set to begin voting on proposed changes to the bipartisan measure starting today.
