Jun. 19--Monthly reports from the Air Transport Association (ATA), an industry group representing most domestic carriers, outline the big problem for airlines. Fewer people are flying and paying less when they do.
The average domestic fare for a 1,000-mile trip was $117.83 in May, according to the ATA, down 4.3 percent from the same month a year ago. Every month in 2003 has shown a decline in fares from the same month a year earlier, with a total 4.5 percent decline through May.
The news is a little better on international routes, where fares are up 3.8 percent in May for 4,000 miles of international travel. For the first five months of 2003, international...
