Pressure Mounts on Budget Impasse in North Carolina.

Jun. 19--With less than two weeks to go before a $384 million hole opens up in the proposed state budget, Gov. Mike Easley and Senate leaders pressured the House on Wednesday to pass an interim spending bill that delays sales and income tax reductions until 2005.

Easley, frustrated at what he called the usual "gamesmanship" that goes on between the House and Senate over the budget, said the interim spending plan should include increases for school and college enrollment growth and for his More at Four pre-kindergarten and elementary school class-size reduction initiatives.
