Jun. 25--University of Florida has become the first college in the state to re...uire a standard written essay for admission, a move that could help students who struggle with tests or simply add another hurdle to college access.
UF announced Tuesday it will re...uire the essay test for students seeking admission in fall 2006. In Orlando, University of Central Florida officials said they likely would follow suit soon.
"We want students to know that writing skills are important for success at UF," Provost David Colburn said in a statement. "We are announcing the new re...uirement early so that students will be prepared."
