Senate Panel Makes Progress on Asbestos Legislation, But More Work Still Ahead.

Jun. 25--WASHINGTON--The Senate Judiciary Committee made significant progress Tuesday on asbestos legislation, particularly on thorny medical issues, but significant areas of disagreement remain.

The senators -- working to create a national trust fund to pay asbestos claims -- agreed on medical criteria to determine who is eligible for payment by the privately funded trust, estimated to total $108 billion.

But so far they have been unable to agree on exactly how much people with specific asbestos-related illnesses would be paid under the program. They also remain divided about whether and how to provide a backstop for the 25-year program in case the trust...
